Closet Series I
This series began in 1988 when I showed my painting mentor Mary Louise Schrodt, a page in Architecture Digest Magazine featuring the homes of the rich and famous. The picture was of a painting of a man’s blue polo jacket hanging over Johnny Carson’s fireplace. I told Mary Louise, “If I could ever paint something like that I would feel very fulfilled.” She replied, “You can do it now- – go photograph one of your jackets.” I did, and Blue Jacket Hang-Up was my first in this series.
When I had my first One Man show of this series I titled it my “Closet Series.” I called it that for two reasons. First, because all of my subjects were from my closet or my wife Barbara’s closet. The second reason was that at that time very few of my friends actually knew that I was an oil painter so I was sort of “coming out of the closet,” letting everyone know I was an oil painter!
This series consists of 17 canvases and took over seven years to paint, from 1988 to 1994. Each canvas is a unique portrait of an article of clothing from our closets. While each was painted in a photo-realistic style it is also termed “heroic,” which means larger than life.
